
If anyone has ever heard Pavarotti sings “Turandot,” they will know the composition within in it that is entitled “Nessun Dorma”. This classical opera was written by Giacomo Puccini and is a tenor aria.
It is a beautiful piece of classical music that tells the story of the prince Calaf, who becomes enamored with a beautiful princess. The princess is not friendly, but is quite mean and cold towards his affections. The Princess’ name is Turandot.
The prince is so in love with her, he goes through the process of answering riddles to win Turandot’s hand in marriage. The three riddles must be answered correctly or the person seeking her hand will have his head chopped off. He is able to answer the riddles correctly.
Turandot is not happy about marrying him and Prince Calaf comes up with a game of his own. Princess Turandot must guess his name correctly. If she does she is does not have to marry him and Calaf loses his head. If she does not, she must marry him. The musical piece “Nessun Dorma” begins when Turandot starts screaming that “None Shall Sleep” until she has discovered his name. It is worth listening to this masterpiece.
