One form of classical music that is very well-loved is the Symphony. It considered to be one of the best forms to showcase the talents of a composer. Composers such as Mozart and Haydn have created some of the best symphonies.
A symphony is a piece of music that contains only one movement. “Symphony” is a Greek word that can be translated into “agree in sound”. Unlike the concerto in which there is discord between the soloist and the background instruments, a symphony has all instruments playing together in harmony. The first symphony was thought to have been played during the 1200s to 1400s.
However, it was not until the 19th century that this form of classical music was seen as a favorite for many. It was Beethoven who is created with changing the way the public saw symphonies as a form of classical music. He not only expanded them, but added depth and emotion to this style of music.
Within symphonies there are various sub-types. These types include choral symphony, Italian symphony, and orchestral symphony. Unlike today in which the classical symphony is given a prominent place, this was not the case back in the 1800s. They were not considered a major piece of music.
Examples of symphonies include Mozart’s Symphony No. 5 and Gustav Mahler’s Eighth Symphony.
